The 1913 date is correct, but this ballet did not depict rape. Yes, there are sexual undertones, but there was no intent for rape to be shown on stage. This is a common misconception. Watch any of the original choreographic reconstructions, read the titles of the movements, or listen to a learned conductor talk about the work. There is a glorification of life and sex, but this performance was tasteless enough to show a literal depiction of what the music was meant to symbolically suggest.

Sorry guv, but the premiere was on May 29, 1913 at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees. You're right on the meaning of the scene however.

this piece actually represents the rape of women in a slavic tribe. that's why people protested when it was premiered back in 1923.

err was it just me who saw them take their underwear off? o_0

What a tasteless performance. This successfully turned a powerful sacrifice to the earth into a rape. The underwear thing was awkward and completely uncalled for. Stravinsky would have killed himself if he saw this.

Dance is subordinate to music. Without music, there is no dance. The producers of this crap are clueless.

the sound quality isn't very good, but I can hear that the orchestra isn't that bad. For all criticizers, the music is very difficult.

the dance to the death only happens at the end of the suite, which isn't included here.
