I wish this hadn't stopped early. The last four and a half minuets is the best.

Monstrously good piece, altough I like it being played faster

This was written for a two manual harpsichord, one of which Bach had acquired just before writing this piece. Why does this recording stop at the beginning of the cadenza? Did Glenn not play it well?

I heartily endorse everything MsJalapeno said lastweek. It was hearing this very piece played bythe Boston Baroque when I was 8 that turned meinto a rabid Bachaholic in six minutes flat. Idrove my parents nuts playing that CD.

I do love Gould's piano playing. Actually it is at this very section where the sound of the harpsichord would have beautifully come forward from the background as the flute and violin play off each other. A great harpsichord can produce a fantastic resonant sound that a piano can never reproduce; but a piano has its advantages but in my opinion rarely in Bach's keyboard concertos.

Very Good kiptw! Whether or not Bach wrote the Ricercar a3 with the Silbermann piano in mind, we will likely never know. One thing is for certain: that the ricercar a6 was written to commemorate Life Day, Monday May 8th of 1747. |
